Treating Chronic Vertigo
Also known as the Foster Maneuver, this exercise breaks from the structure of the previous three exercises.
- Kneel down, looking up at the ceiling.
- Press your head against the floor, with your chin tucked in. Wait in this position for 30 seconds.
- Swivel your head in the direction of the ear that has vertigo. Wait for 30 seconds.
- Move onto your hands and knees, keeping your head turned to the side.
- Keeping your head turned, raise it so it’s facing upwards from your position on all fours.
- Slowly stand up.
One of the more popular maneuvers for people suffering from vertigo, it’s also easily one of the most effective.
- Identify the side of your head your vertigo is “coming from”.
- Sit on the edge of your bed with your back straight, and a pillow on the bed, behind you, where your shoulders will be when you lie down in a moment.
- Turn your head to the side of the vertigo.
- Lay down quickly, so the pillow is between your shoulders. Maintain this position for 30 seconds.
- Turn your head to the other side. Roll over in that direction, onto your side. Wait 30 seconds.
- Slowly sit up, and stay there for a few minutes.
The Semont-Toupet Maneuver is similar to this. Do either one three times in 24 hours, until there is no more dizziness.
The Brandt-Daroff Exercise, in turn, is also similar to both of these maneuvers.
Start in a similar position, but instead of laying on your back, quickly lay down to the left or right, with your head turned in that direction. Stay there for 30 seconds, then sit back up and lay down in the other direction.
