“Life is short, smile while you still have teeth.”

You might laugh when you hear that quote, but for some, losing teeth, or having discolored teeth is something they have to deal with every time they look in the mirror. Being unhappy with the way you look can really hinder your self-confidence.

But does it really matter how our teeth look?

Our teeth and smiles have actually been rated as our second most important feature, only behind personality.

So good-looking teeth are important, not only for the way we look but also for our self-worth.

One common issue many face is a build up of tartar. How can you remove tartar? Is it a big deal? But firstly, what actually is tartar?

Tartar Buildup

Tartar is a common dental problem caused by insufficient brushing and a bad diet. Once tartar has built up on your teeth, from food and bacteria, it becomes harder to brush your teeth properly. If it’s left untreated it can cause cavities, infections or even worse.

Dentists recommend that you go for a professional cleaning every six months. But while you’re at home you can reduce tartar buildup with these cool organic remedies.

Keep reading for three natural ways to remove tartar.

1.) Brush With Baking Soda

Swap your regular toothpaste for baking soda and a pinch of salt.

In a cup, mix a tablespoon of baking soda with half a teaspoon of salt. Rinse your toothbrush and dip it into the mixture. Then brush your teeth for the recommended time (about 2-3 minutes).

This remedy should help to dissolve some of the tartar build up. Try to do this every other day. Once the tartar buildup has lessened, you can reduce the treatment to once a week.

You can also make a mouthwash with baking soda as the main ingredient. Mix half a cup of baking soda with one cup of water, ten drops of lemon oil, four teaspoons of vegetable glycerin and one teaspoon of Aloe Vera gel. You can use this mixture twice a day regularly.

2.) Apply Cider Vinegar

For stubborn tartar buildup and stains, try soaking your toothbrush in apple cider vinegar and then brushing your teeth as usual. Try to do this only once or twice a week maximum. Apple cider vinegar is very acidic and can damage your tooth enamel if it’s left on too long, or used too often.

You could also make a diluted mouthwash with one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar mixed in a cup of water. As it’s mild, you can use it as part of your daily routine.

3.) Sweet Fruits

Fruits, seriously? Yes, grab some sweet strawberries and tomatoes for the ultimate toothpaste!

Rub strawberries or tomatoes on your teeth and let the juice stand for five minutes. They can reduce tartar buildup and also help your teeth to become whiter.

How does it work? It’s because they are rich in Vitamin C. The same goes for other fruits that are abundant in Vitamin C, such as bell peppers, lemons, oranges and various berries.
